The first step in remodeling the new-to-me RV is in removing the really weird furniture currently taking up all the space.

With these two piano-looking benches, there is no room for any functional furniture, like a kitchen table or comfortable seating, so they absolutely have to go. I really like the convertible dinette booth in my existing RV, The Void. I like convertible furniture in general, it’s very efficient. In this case, it’s a booth that can fit up to 4 people (cozily) for a meal, which then turns into a twin-sized bed. Since there will be friends popping in and out along the trip, extra sleeping space would be very valuable.
That will take up one of these benches. At this point, I don’t know what I want to replace the other. In The Void, I have a dinette both and a little fold-down table with a computer chair for Franklin to do his writing while on the road. I took out the very bulky captain’s chairs on either side of the little table, replaced one with said computer chair (much more comfortable and ergonomically better for extended sitting) and I replaced the other with a large drawer set that I use as my food pantry. I thought maybe I could recreate the whole setup here, in The Transit?

But before I can start constructing new furniture, I need to remove the old furniture. I got out my trusty old Makita power driver and started removing screws. So many screws! First I had to figure out how to open all the folding panels to get to the piano hinges, so I could remove the hinges and finally remove the panel.

Those strange benches turned out to be hiding 2 Ikea cube shelving units inside! Presumably, the various folding panels, when opening correctly, would have allowed access to these shelving units lying on their backs on the floor as storage cubicles. I’m not entirely sure how the access should have worked, even after taking the whole thing apart, because I never got to the storage cubes when unfolding all the panels a bunch of times.
At any rate, the shelving units are decent quality, so they, like the giant cube storage in the bedroom, will be coming with me for my future non-mobile home. For now, they go outside in the shed to hold tools and supplies until it’s time to pack them in a moving truck. The Transit is much more spacious with all the bulky benches gone, giving me plenty of room to paint! But that’s for another story.
